Foundations of Law

Module code: LW1190

In this module you'll develop the skills that separate lawyers from those who just know what the law is: the ability to research law, and to develop persuasive arguments about how new laws and new cases influence how the law applies to real life situations. Importantly you will learn to think and write like a lawyer: critically, succinctly and clearly. This forms a foundational basis for your legal writing skills in both academic and professional contexts.

You’ll also investigate the relationship between law, justice and crime, considering how law works - and how it doesn't - for differing communities. This will help you in your future learning in the context of legitimacy of state control and theories of justice. Considering legal issues from a social perspective will give you a great foundation in understanding the law and how it affects people and their lives.
